We’ve had our main holiday this year and the rest of the Summer seems very long and hot, all stretched our before me. Between us we are both saving every penny we have; me for college fees, Bubb for our intended house purchase.
So, the Summer looks hot and long.
Last Friday I took the calendar from the wall and filled it up with every free and reasonably cheap event from now and until Christmas that London has to offer. I’m amazed by just how much the City has on to keep us plebs entertained.
Friday I went out to SE16 for a shoot and went on a river boat up to the Thames Barrier and back afterwards for the sheer hell of it. Sometimes being a tourist in your own City can be fun. The afternoon was endless blue and eye-achingly bright. The East End boys who ran the boat service filled our minds with such gems as “BMW’s are so good because they are made from scrap metal shipped from London [points to pile of scrap near the Thames Barrier]: British steel!” They also seemed to have a thing against modern art as Tate Modern and Anthony Gormley’s ‘Quantum Cloud’ sculpture next to the Dome were slighted. I did learn where the captain of The Mayflower was buried though so score one for knowledge. If you have a spare three hours and it’s sunny I highly recommend it.
Yesterday, Bubb and I went out to complete my shoot for college (he is such a good assistant) then decided to stroll along the South Bank to the gardens at Coin Street next to the Oxo Tower for the Cuban Festival.
When we were packing up a group of youf ran down the street towards us, bare chested and beflagged. They seemed in a near panic. I checked my watch, yes it had just gone 2pm and they hadn’t found a pub to watch the England match in. One of their number was wailing plantively - while looking through someone’s lounge window - “They’re in the tunnel!”
“Oi sweetheart!” they called “Where’s the nearest pub?”
Feeling smug with my newfound SE16 knowledge I pointed them to the ‘Old Justice’ two minutes up the road. They whooped and called me treasure.
Two minutes later while checking out some very pricey flats near Shad Thames I heard a yell from the whole of South East London. A goal! I hoped they had found the pub, and quickly.
The Cuban festival was jolly with the smell of mojitos and cigars. The bands were really good and people seemed to be getting really into their dancing. One man I spied with several attractive dancing partners.
So, men, learn how to dance and you will find popularity with the ladies.
We did flop into our beds last night full of the glory that was London.
