Open Garden Squares Weekend

Another day, another London delight. Today we saw some of the hidden city courtesy of the annual Open Garden Squares Weekend.

A tip, get your tickets in advance from the ‘Visit London’ office on Regent Street and save £5 on a pair of tickets. So, two whole days of garden snooping for £10!

We decided to limit our viewing to one day and set out at 11.00 this morning… We planned a roughly circular route starting out from Barnes to the Oval, to Temple, through Highbury and Islington, Kings Cross, Russell Square, Gower Street, Great Portland Street and High Street Kensington.

Harleyford Road Community Garden SW8
Middle Temple EC4
Canonbury Square N1
Camley Street Natural Park NW1
SOAS Roof Garden WC1
The Academy Gardens WC1
Fitzroy Square W1
Edwardes Square W8

We had to cut short our ambitious plans but managed to get round the eight above with stops for a cream tea, wine and pimms. Bubb managed to steal the show by wearing a panama. It was like a secret symbol between him and the gatekeepers, it garnered instant respect and geniality.

Pimms!

At each square we sighed and praised the architecture, the harmony and beauty of the surroundings and the luck of the rich buggers that lived there. How many times did we want to win the lottery this afternoon? Oh boy.

Our favourite square was the last of the day: Edwardes Square. A huge, beautiful, private oasis.

Edwardes Square

Lucky, lucky residents.

Lovely stuff. Were there lots of people garden-snooping?

There were quite a few at the more popular gardens but some were almost empty. It’s a good thing to do – and you get to see bits of London you never knew existed – on a hot sunny day.

Thanks Pete and Kate. Yes, it was glorious. Drinking Pimms with a man in a panama hat in a private garden is highly recommended!
