Shake it like a medium format peekture

After an administrative screw-up yesterday - not enough people enroled to run - my studio photography course finally started today.

Things moved along pretty fast so it’s damn lucky I’m quick study. We immediately got stuck in and were given a Mamiya Pro S RB 67 to play with. It’s chunky, metal and heavy. The ‘clunk’, ‘thunk’ and ’sproing’ of cocking the mirror and pressing the shutter release were very satisfying: it’s a camera to covert. I’m looking at secondhand ones on eBay as we speak. After being fairly happy with a 35mm SLR for a long time I am looking to go into medium format (and toy camera medium format) in a big way.

All those big negatives; it is camera pr0n, yes.

We ran a test 120 film through them - without a tripod so it so won’t be sharp - which we are expected to develop on our own next week. Better to screw up a test film than cock up something you care about.

Our lecturer is Spanish (incidentially we have the same geeky black Prada glasses, so respect) and when talking about the moon as a light source sounded exactly like Noel Fielding. I had to stiffle an inappropriate giggle at this point. My studio partner is a lovely Scottish girl from Paisley (insert obligatory squee here) who says ‘wee’ and ‘aye’ most beautifully.

Now my part-time course is sorted out I need to get a job to pay for Uni tuition fees come September. Can someone just pay me to stay at home reading LJ, f_w and fic all day? No, didn’t think so.

    Pete messing about with photography all day is a dream. If you win the lottery can I have a tenner?

    Chintzy, good to see you matey. I know DT is from there - hence the squee! Sadly I didn’t have the nerve to ask… maybe next week x

    I have a Yashica Mat-124 G. Do you want it? The light meter is broken, but otherwise it works, I think.

    My Holga has arrived. They cocked it up and sent me a 120FN instead of a 120N, so there’s a built-in flash rather than a hot-shoe, but seeing as it’s so cheap I’m not too fussed. If I decide I really, really want the 120N after all I’ll just buy it and have two Holgas.

    Am shooting my first roll of 120 film today. Must remember to wind it on after each shot - I already forgot once, which should make for an interesting picture. Apparently you can get onto the roof of our office (eight floors up), so I might try taking some from there at lunchtime.

    Sounds like you’ll have a good time on this course. Am only a little bit jealous.*

    * Lie: am totally envious.

    Do ask her or I will.
