I lived in Japan up to the age of 5. Moving regularly with parents
‘in the military’ exposed me to all sorts of cultures, foods and
people. Local culture included toys.
For my birthday Mum picked up a secondhand doll which became my favourite ever toy. She placed the doll in my
hands and said she was made just for me. Look at the big ‘B’ stitched
onto her handmade dress; she was obviously mine.
My playmates didn’t like the doll - it was freaky, ugly and weird they said -
I naturally, loved her. Her hair was the same as mine; straggly and always in knots (especially if I’d been good at dodging my Mum and our
Japanese au-pair with the ‘devil-brush’.) Her eyes fascinated me.
Where other people saw ugly, I saw cleverness, mystery, beauty and the
ability to keep my secrets. I sought her serious council whenever a
problem arose.
We grew up together, little by little, and I dressed her proudly in my homemade creations. Adults indulged me:
“You look so alike. Did you make that all by yourself?”
When I came here to go to school she was packed away in the
top-most cupboard, “to keep her safe.” We’d see each other very soon.
Of course, I forgot about her, ponies and bullies had intruded on our friendship.
I saw her again in 2001 at an exhibition in Paris. There she was!
And forgot about her again a short while after.
I saw a picture of her yesterday which pulled at my childhood
insides. Two hours and a few websites later I found something close to her. She was for sale!
I know you can’t go back and shouldn’t even try, but I did. She
arrives soon hopefully, and I am so excited I feel silly. I’m a
grown up now after all.
Welcome home Blythe.

You reminded me that I found the original, torn and tattered copy of my favourite book when I was little the other day in an old box in the closet….

I had a rag doll as a child, lovingly made for me by my aunt. I named her Matilda and loved her to death, through various changes of hair and eye colour, and many, many different dresses. As I grew up I played with her less and less, although I was still very attached to her for sentimental reasons. One holiday I came home from school to find that she was gone - my mother swears that she wouldn’t consciously have given her away, but the fact remains that Matilda was gone. I was devastated - there’s always some part of you, however old you are, that still loves that favourite childhood toy, isn’t there?

Sadly no, mine was brunette. The one above (which looks very similar in the face) is ‘modded’. Blythe fans do all sorts of crazy things to them… like dye their hair.

childhoof memories… A whole business devoted to that if you start to think about it ?
But then…

Undoubtedly. Lots of companies will indulge any ’70’s/’80’s child whim, for a price.
I could be very cynical about this… but I’m making an executive decision today not to.
