Being timely I thought I should blog about our new Holy Father, Pope
Benedict XVI, formerly Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger of Germany (78.) Our
new Pope is a traditionalist and a Catholic conservative. We shall not
see any change in the Church’s stance on morality, abortion or
ordination of women from this scholarly man.
I shall not dwell on his youthful occupations - thank you to the ‘Daily
Mirror’ for exposing that - but look at the name he has chosen.
The last Pope Benedict was an Italian, 1914-1922, and known for his
writings on Dante and St Francis amongst other things. He steered the
Church through the first world war and was known for his conservative
diplomacy.
The primo Benedict was of course the founder of Western Monasticism and
creator of the Benedictine order. He also did a nice line in
after-dinner drinks and had a wonderful set of frescos painted about
his life in the Abbazia di Monte Oliveto Maggiore in Tuscany by Sodoma.
If one has nettle-rash, problems with witchcraft or temptation, or you
are a servant who has broken his masters belongings then St Benedict is
the man to invoke.
I could be clever and say that I was so confident that Cardinal
Ratzinger would be made Pope that I put a bet on him, but that would be
defying the papal instruction of 1591 to the faithful forbidding
Catholics from betting on a conclave.
Oh well, off to the betting shop…

So much for the long overdue reform of the Catholic Church. No great surprise with Cardinal Ratzinger’s elevation to the Papacy, but it’s a blow to any prospect of the Church moving forwards on issues such as homosexuality, contraception and as you said, the ordination of women. Still, I don’t anticipate a massively long wait for the next Conclave, so there’s hope yet.

And I’ve heard he’s said he wants to retire at 80…
Lovely to see you Black Rat. Haven’t had time to blog or read blogs much lately but Bubb has related - in every detail - the latest post of yours on ‘metal detection’, arf.
You coming out on Thurs night for drinks at The Ship? Quite a few coming.

Joseph Ratzinger, eh. My boss suggested there might be rabbis in high places, hi-fiving each other this morning.

Hey Bobble, how much did you make (for the poor and needy, ahem)? I think it was inevitable that we would get a hardline pope this time, as we live in a global atmosphere of increasing political and religious conservatism. It’ll swing back eventually. In the meantime, the Bush administration will be lapping it up and making stronger alliances…

Bobble: I’m not around on Thursday evening. Sadly, I’ve got work commitments when I would far rather be joining you lot for a good night out. Arse. But I haven’t forgotten Tower 42 and our plan to repeat it, so when do you fancy?
