New York is exactly as you expect. Exactly.
It feels somehow not quite real. Every street, vista and even individual people appear to be from a movie.
After only seeing New York from the inside of the bank’s building or a
hotel room previously, to actually walk about this trip was beyond
wonderful.
Everyone knows New York. It’s streets are seen every week on our TV’s and film screens and yes, it really is like that.
While drinking tea in Moby’s teashop ‘Teany’ on the Lower East Side I
see several bag ladies pushing laden shopping carts leaning into the
biting -5 degree wind. In Bowery a leather clad veteran inching his way
across the wide road in his wheelchair, raising a proud finger at the
beeping trucks.
At our favourite breakfast spot so far - ‘Diner 24′ in Chelsea at
8th and 17th - I do a double take as I see a city bus go past with
Sarah Jessica Parker emblazoned on the side. Sex and the City indeed.
Eating the creamiest ever cannoli in Vesuvio Bakery I get ‘hugged and
honeyed’ by the lovely loud Italian-American waitress (who today is
sadly on her own and running between customers). I want to smack the
grouchy Brits at the next table who complain about the sporadic service.
Eating - so much and so varied cuisine - only a block from our
apartment at any time I choose. The sexy gay waiters at ‘The Dish’
positively sashay between kitchen and table finding time to drop
sarcastic comments on the quality of the male customers.
I walk around constantly looking up at the iron fire escape stairs
which feature on every old building, resisting temptation to take yet
another photograph. I imagine sitting on them on a hot Summer night
listening to the blare of passing fire truck horns.
That so far is my New York.

“New York is exactly as you expect. Exactly.” That’s exactly what I thought too, from the very first moment I arrived, at JFK airport, and we took one of those huge yellow cabs to get to Manhattan. The cab already smelled like NY.
Have a great time there! (although I see you are already at it…
