I was thinking of writing a bit about interailing being the new grand tour.
Is it?

I don’t think so. I think hostels would be frowned upon.

Glamour and money aside I was thinking about a nations’ youth bogging off to Europe to educate themselves about art, foreign cusine and brothels. On that score I don’t think much has changed ;o)

I don’t know that they do though. All the ones I met got drunk with the people they met on the bus, slept with the people they met in the hostel and didn’t bother with any cuisine or art. I think they were trying to find themselves. *sigh*

Isn’t Australia the place that everyone does that these days, rather than Europe? I mean it doesn’t offer the same cultural opportunities, but it does rather reward the lazy, insofar as the language barrier goes..

Keith’s right. Interrailing was the old new grand tour. The new new grand tour is SE Asia, Oz, Peru. Then they come home, do a near-worthless degree, and smoke stinky little roll-up cigarettes while boring you senseless about Macchu sodding Picchu.
